—Team Spring slides to 17th, women’s skeleton race cancelled—
LA PLAGNE, Fra.—Justin Kripps and Bryan Barnett fought their way back into the top-10 in World Cup two-man bobsleigh in La Plagne, France on Saturday.
Kripps, of Summerland, B.C., and Edmonton’s Bryan Barnett teamed up to clock a two-run 10th-place time of 1:59.40 on the relatively unknown 1,507-metre track winding through the French Alps.
“We put together two good pushes and two good runs so I was happy with our performance even though the speed wasn’t there,” said Kripps, who adds that despite not perfect driving, the Canucks seem to be getting outgunned on equipment this year. “We definitely don’t have the fastest starts yet. We are striving for that, but we are in the mix. I just feel the drive is much better than a lot of sleds, but we still seem to be much slower than most of the field unless we are on more difficult tracks where we can separate ourselves a bit more.”
Calgary’s Chris Spring and teammate, Alexander Kopacz, of London, Ont., slid into 17th spot at 2:00.03.
Germany’s Francesco Friedrich won the race with a time of 1:58.48. Latvia’s Oskars Melbardis and Daumants Dreiskens slid to the silver at 1:58.52, while Switzerland’s Rico Peter and Janne Bror Van der Zijde rounded out the two-man podium in third place with a time of 1:58.69.
Kripps will welcome teammate, Tim Randall, back from injury into his four-man sled on Sunday.
The women’s skeleton race was cancelled due to poor track conditions.
