Canadian Women Set to Make Bobsleigh History at North America’s Cup in Park City

—Canada’s Alysia Rissling to pilot first-ever all-women four-man bobsleigh, February 6-7—

PARK CITY, UtahCanada’s Alysia Rissling will take a historic descent down the Park City track this weekend, becoming the first person ever to pilot an all-women’s four-man bobsleigh crew in an FIBT-sanctioned bobsleigh race.

In just her third year driving a bobsleigh, Calgary’s Rissling and her crew of Julia Corrente (Chatham, Ont.), Courtenay Farrington (Calgary) and Josee Theoret (Airdrie, Alta.) will be fifth off the line on Saturday in the first of back-to-back North America’s Cup races at the 2002 Olympic Track. The United States will also field an all-woman’s team that will start behind the Canucks.

Rissling is the current overall women’s leader on the North America’s Cup. Corrente, who pushed Kaillie Humphries for one week at the Konigssee World Cup stop in January, pilots the other Canadian sled on the premiere bobsleigh development circuit. The two Canucks will combine their women’s teams to fill this historic sled.

The FIBT opened the door for mixed gender and women’s teams to compete in the four-man event in September 2014. Canada’ two-time Olympic medallist, Kaillie Humphries and American Elana Meyers Taylor, became the first women to pilot mixed gender teams on the World Cup this year in Calgary.

“The ruling by our international federation immediately increased opportunities for our female athletes, and things have progressed quickly since September,” said Sarah Storey, president, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton. “We’ve gone from mixed-gender sleds to, now, an all-female sled competing in four-man races at the international level. As our Canadian athletes continue to lead the charge in what may ultimately result in an all-women’s four-man competition one day, we hope this progression also inspires young women at all levels to chase their sport dreams.”

The Canadian women will hit the start line at 10 a.m. MST for each four-man race on Saturday and Sunday in Park City, Utah.
