Great Gough Slides to Skeleton Gold in Lake Placid

December 19, 2008

LAKE PLACID, N.Y.—Canada’s Amy Gough owns the podium in Lake Placid, New York.

The 31-year-old Gough won her second consecutive Intercontinental Cup skeleton race in as many years on the Lake Placid venue – the only two victories of her Intercontinental Cup career.

Gough powered her way to the top of the podium on Friday after clocking a two-run time of one minute 53.16 seconds. It was the first podium finish of the year for the Abbotsford, B.C. native who has split time on the World Cup and Intercontinental Cup circuits over the last three seasons.

“I did win here last as well so it was great to come back and do it again,” said Gough. “It is very exciting to finish the first half of the season on a strong note. I am now looking forward to going home to enjoy Christmas.”

Gough was joined on the women’s podium by Donna Creighton, of Great Britain, who settled for the silver with a two-run time of 1:53.36. Germany’s Katharina Heinz battled her way to the bronze-medal position with a time of 1:53.61.

Heinz’s teammate, Michi Halilovic shared the gold medal in the final men’s race before the holiday break with Matthew Antoine of the United States. The two finished in a dead heat after clocking a winning time of 1:50.37. Andy Wood, of Great Britain, was third (1:50.41).

Five other Canadians also suited up for the final men’s and women’s race in North America before heading to Europe in the New Year.

Calgary’s Darla Deschamps, who won the season opener on her home track, finished eighth (1:54.98), while Carla Pavan, of Lethbridge, Alta., was disqualified after the first run. Toronto’s Mike Douglas led the Canadians in the men’s race. Douglas finished sixth with a two-run time of 1:51.11. Jamie Landry, of Prince Albert, Sask., was 14th (1:52.54); while Calgary’s Keith Loach was 16th (1:52.78).
