Canada’s Top Bobsleigh Athletes Fifth at World Cup in Germany

—Team Spring fifth in men’s four-man, Kaillie Humphries fifth in women’s race—

 

WINTERBERG, Ger.—Canada’s top sleds in men’s four-man and women’s bobsleigh settled for fifth spot at the World Cup in Winterberg, Germany on Sunday.

Chris Spring and his four-man crew edged closer to the podium after clocking the fifth-fastest time at 1:50.83, while Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse matched the performance in women’s bobsleigh after posting a time of 1:55.63.

Calgary’s Spring and his team of Jesse Lumsden, of Burlington, Ont., Ottawa’s Cody Sorensen, and Saskatoon’s Ben Coakwell continue to lead the Canadian squad and edge closer to their first four-man World Cup medal as a newly-formed crew this year.

It was a German sweep of the men’s podium. Germany’s Maximillian Arndt, Marko Huebenbecker, Alexander Roediger and Martin Putz clocked the top two-run time of the day at 1:50.09 for the second straight gold this weekend. Fellow Germans, Francesco Friedrich, Jannis Baecker, Gregor Bermbach and Thorsten Margis grabbed their second straight silver as well at 1:50.32. Thomas Florschuetz, Joshua Bluhm, Kevin Kuske and Christian Pose completed the sweep in third at 1:50.49.

Canada’s Lyndon Rush (Humboldt, Sask.), Calgary’s Lascelles Brown and Edmonton’s Dave Bissett and Neville Wright, slid to ninth spot at 1:51.17.

Justin Kripps, of Summerland, B.C., and his team of James McNaughton, of Newmarket, Ont., Toronto’s Tim Randall and Edmonton’s Bryan Barnett matched dropped out of the top-10 in 11th at 1:51.22.

 

Kaillie Humphries finished off the podium for just the second time in the last 17 World Cup races while piloting the top Canadian sled. Humphries and Moyse posted the fastest start times in both runs to place fifth with a combined time of 1:55.63.

Germany’s Sandra Kiriasis and Franziska Fritz captured their first title of the season with a time of 1:55.41. Elana Meyers and Lolo Jones take the overall World Cup lead with a second-place finish at 1:55.42, while Germany’s Anja Schneiderheinz and Stephanie Schneider snagged the bronze at 1:55.48.

Edmonton’s Jenny Ciochetti and Chelsea Valois, of Zenon Park, Sask., placed 14h (1:56.77).
