ALTENBERG—Canada’s two four-man bobsleighs slid into the top-10 on one of the most difficult tracks in the world on Sunday in Altenberg, Germany.
Justin Kripps, of Summerland, B.C., piloted his crew to a solid seventh place finish in his first World Cup race on the highly-technical and lightening quick track. Kripps and this team of Joey Nemet (Burlington, Ont.), Bryan Barnett (Edmonton), and Ben Coakwell (Saskatoon) clocked a time of 1:49.33.
Chris Spring made his first return to Altenberg since experiencing a horrific crash three years ago. Spring and his Calgary-based team of Alexander Kopacz, Josh Kirkpatrick and Derek Plug finished 10th for the second straight race at 1:49.66.
“The boys all did well today and put in a really tough effort,” said Tom De La Hunty, coach, Canadian Bobsleigh Team. “It is very encouraging to have both sleds in the top-10. That means you are in the mix and anything can happen. But we are suffering big time on the start and we must work on that.”
Germany’s Nico Wather, Andreas Bredau, Marko Huebenbecker, and Christian Poser won the gold medal with a time of 1:48.11. Latvia’s Oskars Melbardis, Daumants Dreiskens, Arvis Vilkaste and Janis Strenga slid to the silver at 1:48.15. Switzerland’s Rico Peter, Janne Bror van der Zijde, Thomas Amrhein and Simon Friedli teamed up to win the bronze medal with a time of 1:48.78.
The World Cup now travels to Konigssee, Germany.
